(29 oct. 1740, Edimburgo, Escocia–19 may. 1795, Londres, Inglaterra).

Biógrafo y abogado escocés, amigo de Samuel Johnson. Boswell conoció a Johnson en 1763, lo frecuentó a menudo (1772 ndash;84), y llevó en sus diarios un registro excepcionalmente detallado de las conversaciones con su amigo. Los dos volúmenes de Life of Samuel Johnson [Vida de Samuel Johnson] (1791) son considerados una de las mejores biografías que se han escrito en lengua inglesa. Su obra Journal of a Tour to the Hebride with Samuel Johnson [Diario de un viaje a las Hébridas con Samuel Johnson] (1785), da cuenta más que nada de las impresiones de Johnson durante el viaje que ambos realizaron a Escocia en 1773. La publicación en el s. XX de los diarios de Boswell lo muestra además como uno de los más grandes diaristas que han existido.
